Artist Statement: 
Upon a recent reread of Hans Christian Andersen's 'The Little Mermaid,' I was struck most by the young mermaid's longing, and her sense of conviction. She is entranced by the world above her, and risks everything to have a chance at love and at gaining a human soul. Depending on the version of the story you read, the little mermaid's story ends more bitter than sweet, but she holds true to herself throughout her adventures. Her courage is commendable, and I chose to depict the little mermaid looking and reaching upwards, intent on following her heart.
