Artist Statement:
We overcomplicate Jesus. We get so caught up in the part of him that was God that we forget that he was mortal. If we forget that, we might forget that Christ was a human so he could be relatable to us in our own mortality.
Along with that, sometimes religious art is beautifully complicated. As an artist I often get so caught up in the meaning and story behind a piece that it feels heavy to compose, create, and present, especially if it’s relatable to a wide audience.
So I decided to create a piece that has a simple story. Jesus found a friendly cat, and bent down to say hello and give ‘em a lil scritchy scratch. I personally can’t relate much because I am super allergic to cats and try to avoid them, but I do try to be somewhat cordial to them if they do brush up against me before giving them a little nudge a different direction. I doubt Jesus was allergic to cats. I think he would have given any little animal a scratch under the chin if it came to say hi to him.
