Title: Eve Mourning Her Sons
Medium: Original Gouache on Paper
Size: 10.5" x 13.5" (14.5" x 17.5" framed)Artist Statement:
Eve is the epitome of a sovereign woman. Her name means the mother of all living. She was the first woman, mother, and matriarch. She embraced sovereignty with Adam, being the first parents. She had to make sacrifices and hard choices, and be the first of so many experiences in a raw, new world. She was learning how to exist, even as she helped her children to learn and grow. She was doing her best to be a mother, when she had never had an earthly one. What heartbreak she must have felt, when one of her sons turned from what she had taught him, and killed his brother. What pain she must have felt experiencing the first murder on this unblemished earth, and have it be the death of her child. She mourned for both of them, the first mother to mourn her children. But despite her loss, the hardships, and the pain, she kept going. We can follow her example, persevere through tragedy and conflict, and do our best no matter the circumstances.
