Artist Statement:
Though Jeanne d’Arc is now known as a defender of the French nation, not everyone was accepting at the time. She was eventually burned at the stake, becoming a patron saint of France. In this painting, Joan is aflame, while cradling her sword, to show that she remained proud and true to herself to the very end. Joan of Arc inspires me to take up space, to follow my gut, to advocate for myself, and to lead, without waiting for permission or acceptance.
