Artist Statement:
My female ancestors were makers. Out of necessity, they stitched and created fabric items for their home and family. Their lives were difficult, involving a lot of cooking and cleaning. The food was eaten, and the home didn’t stay clean, but their cloth creations were a constant evidence of their creativity. I use plants to make dyes for my cloth, which helps connect me to the earth. I stitch before, using stitch shibori techniques to create the designs, and after dyeing. As I create using these slow processes I feel a connection to my Heavenly Mother and to my female ancestors. I am consistently drawn to the symbolism trees, as they represent the Divine Feminine and the connection of earth and heaven.
