Artist Statement:
The original concept of “Message of Mortality,” was the ancient pagan idea of ages of woman: maiden, matron, and crone. I added the phases of the moon to enhance the idea of the changes of life that women experience. The background is the Tree of Life, for Woman is the source of life. I sculpted in water-base clay, twice. The first one broke in drying, so I redesigned and did it again. The second also broke but I fired it anyway. I mounted on board, faux finished to resemble bronze, and highlighted the broken edges with gold. Because of the break and working my way through it, the concept changed and became, “Message of Mortality.”
