Book a beautiful art gallery just a few blocks from the Provo City Center temple for your wedding or other private events. Located in the charming historic distric of downtown Provo, it is easy walking distance from the Provo City Center Temple, lots of public parking, and more, this location is central and accessible for a wide variety of events. The Compass Gallery was the perfect venue for our intimate wedding reception. The communication with their team was quick, friendly, and efficient throughout the planning process. They provided excellent recommendations for well-priced catering and live music that really elevated the event. The quality of their work was exceptional - the beautiful, unique space with its inspiring art displays and intimate atmosphere was exactly what we were looking for. With about 80 guests, there was plenty of room for everyone to sit, chat, and dance the night away. We loved the live music played on the gallery's piano and the gorgeous views of downtown Provo out the windows. The Compass Gallery helped make our special day truly memorable. Jeddah B. Queens and Priestesses: Guiding Emblems New Work by Kristen Barsch von Benedikt April 3rd - 25th Historically, artistic representations depict the divine attributes in two separate and opposing categories: feminine or masculine. In my understanding however, these qualities work in harmonious cooperation with one another to form the balanced and integrated whole all humans should strive to obtain in order to live a happy life. In the mythologies of the Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, and Christians, the divine attributes are often physically embodied by different characters, typically human in appearance. The feminine or masculine qualities of these figures tend to be dramatically exaggerated. Unfortunately, over time the feminine has acquired negative connotations and blame and is portrayed as exclusively sensual. This lens obscures and undermines the deeper meanings and original intent behind these symbolic characters. Instead I prefer to celebrate the feminine qualities, portraying them in ways that are applicable to all. In them women maintain their emblematic attributes: ferocity, innocence, courage, intelligence, strength, beauty, and faith. Jess Hough Moab based plein air print maker Jess Hough is a local Moab artist, printmaker, carpenter, and handyman. She spends most of her time plein air drawing out in the red rock desert, making traditional intaglio prints on her homemade printing press, making paper, and building hand made frames for her art. In 2023 Jess was selected to be resident Community Artist in the Parks, a local program which partners artists with the national parks and monuments of Southeast Utah. Much of this collection was created during her time out in the parks doing demos of print making and plein air drawing. Rooted in faith, motherhood, and intuitive mark-making, this collection celebrates becoming more child-like in the ways that bring joy, connection, and growth. Child-ish Child-ish is a reflection about the soul-centering goodness that children bring to the world, and a nudge to all grownups to move closer to that goodness in us. As a mom and teacher I get to see the way that children engage with the world every day. It’s not perfect, it’s not always logical or sensible, but it is usually honest and openhearted and active. I love the tendency of children to trust, love, try again (and again), experiment, hope, demand, question, forgive and not necessarily notice what is expected or “correct”. As an artist, I try to reflect this kind of childlikeness in my process. I work with intuitive mark-making, playful composition, and layered textures that echo the experience of childhood—cutting, pasting, coloring, experimenting. I try to let go of overthinking and allow space for things to feel less perfect and more alive and connecting. Since I was a child, I have loved the stories of Jesus focusing on little children. He taught that we are meant to become like little children and the scriptures say that children are “alive in Christ”. (Matthew 18:3, Moroni 8:12). I want to be more child-ish in the ways that bring joy and connection with others and with God. I want to see others as God’s children and see myself that way too. I want to trust enough to let myself learn and grow without fear of failure. Esther Hi'ilani Candari Hawai 'i born and raised, Asian American, Utah based artist, researcher, and educator Esther was born to a mixed Asian American family and raised on the beautiful eastern shore of Oahu, Hawai'i. As an artist, her work reflects this rich multicultural upbringing and often draws upon Polynesian symbols and cultural ideologies. Her work is primarily figurative and explores concepts such as; multiracial identity; gender and the female gaze in context of religion; and the nuance of human psychology that can be expressed through portraiture. Many of her portraits break the fourth wall with their direct gaze and challenge the viewer to engage with the subject on an intimate level, rather than merely observe. The foundations of her painting techniques are traditional in nature, but her meticulously crafted multimedia applications infuse the final works with a unique, innovative, and captivating edge. Lisa DeLong Lisa DeLong studied painting and received her MA in Art History at Brigham Young University. She moved to London in 2001. DeLong completed her doctoral studies at The Prince's School of Traditional Arts in 2007, studying under Professor Keith Critchlow and Paul Marchant, two of the world’s foremost geometers. DeLong is now Outreach Program Manager for the Prince's School, designing and conducting educational workshops internationally in places like Azerbaijan, Abu Dhabi, Pakistan, Malaysia, China, and Pakistan. In her paintings, DeLong investigates the beauty found in the conversation between order and the unexpected, chaos and cosmos. Both the patterns and the raw materials of her works are informed by travels and research with the Prince’s School.
