Artist Statement:
Saint Hildegard of Bingen was many things including; an ahead, polymath, writer, philosopher, visionary, medical practitioner, composer, and mystic.  There are more surviving chants by Hildegard than by any other composer from the entire Middle Ages (of which she holds in her arms in this depiction). As she was a visionary mystic, she transcended the bans on women's social participation-allowing her to become well renowned as a writer, preacher, and composer during her time.
