Ancient Egyptians associated lizards with wisdom, protection, and abundance, sometimes preserving them alongside human remains and depicting them in hieroglyphs. In Greek and Roman tradition, lizards carried connotations of good fortune and renewal, partly because their winter hibernation and spring reemergence read as a small yearly cycle of death and rebirth.
