The Nautilus Gold Plated Stainless Steel Stud Earring offers a sleek, tarnish proof design crafted for long-lasting style and durability.
The nautilus shell's chambered spiral has long been treated as an emblem of growth and renewal: 19th-century American poet Oliver Wendell Holmes made it famous in "The Chambered Nautilus" (1858), reading the animal's habit of building an ever-larger new chamber and sealing off the old one as a metaphor for spiritual and intellectual growth. Renaissance Europe prized the shell for a very different reason: nautilus shells were mounted in gold and silver as extravagant "wonder-objects" for cabinets of curiosities, prestige pieces meant to display the owner's wealth and the strangeness of the natural world. Though the nautilus's spiral is frequently cited as a perfect example of the golden ratio, that claim is a popular myth; measured shells actually follow a somewhat different logarithmic spiral, closer to a 4:3 ratio.
