Artist Statement:
She's who I see in my reflection when I look in the mirror. Every mother & great-grandmother, my whole world came from them. I see Her in every petal, in the flowers — in my daughter as she brings them to me in a little glass jar. Endlessly backwards, simultaneously forward. "In the beginning, God created the Heaven & the earth." This Heaven, this earth. Pulling together the pieces of every generation, scraps of beauty into a woven world to wrap her children up in. An heirloom to last through summers & sorrows. I'll continue piecing it together — with my hands that work like Hers. To echo the stitches She's already placed, to mend with patches as it gets worn. To add colors & patterns that were mine alone to give. To wrap my own children up in & tell them stories about the ones that came before. I'll let them stitch along side me, their trailing threads & scribbled clouds. Signs of little hands, signs of new life following. We'll carry it, draped around us on every sick day. Every picnic, lay it across the flowers & stare up together at Her clouds. Above, below, around, every piece reminding us — we are a part of Her.
