Artist Statement:

A people, not in their homeland, caused concern by their numbers. To use Pharaoh's words, "they are more and mightier than we." His solution is alarming - drown all the baby boys. As alarming as this is, we still do it today. We metaphorically discard people all the time. We discard people over their age, their gender, their religion, their sexual identity, their education level, etc. We come up with a million reasons to create hierarchies. We routinely decide who to elevate and who to drown. Is this what we want to be known for? And it is extremely significant who was asked to witness this scene: Miriam. Miriam was likely a little girl herself. Miriam alone was deemed the safest choice to watch over. How often are women asked to be the witness of horrors? Miriam, the guard, the witness. I think of that brave little girl and am in awe of the task placed upon her shoulders.
