Artist Statement: 
Tamar is one of just five women listed in the genealogy of Jesus. She was the mother of two of Judah’s children (twins), and a direct ancestor of King David. Recognizing her right to posterity in House of Israel, Tamar risked her life to take her place as a mother. In the moment depicted here, Judah has sent for Tamar, his now pregnant daughter in-law, to be burned, but upon realizing that he is the father of her children and has not fulfilled his duty to her, he acknowledges “She hath been more righteous than I” (Gen. 38:26).
