Across cultures and history, silver has carried spiritual and symbolic weight as well as financial value. Sumerian and Egyptian artisans were working it into religious objects by the third millennium BCE, and Egyptians at times prized it above gold. Across many mythologies Greek Selene, Vedic Chandra, Celtic Arianrhod its cool white sheen tied it to the moon and to cycles of renewal. Pearls were already luxury goods in the Mediterranean world by the third millennium BCE, and Roman status anxiety around them ran so high that Julius Caesar restricted who was permitted to wear them by rank. Romans dedicated pearls to Venus, born from a shell in myth, and early Christian writers later adopted the pearl as an emblem of purity. Because a pearl forms slowly, in layers, inside a living mollusk, cultures as different as ancient Rome and imperial China both came to read it as a symbol of patience and accumulated wisdom.
