Artist Statement: 
Surrounded by butterfly bush a little girl reaches for a delicate creature. While Astrea, goddess of innocence, presides over the scene. There are indications in this painting of the fleeting nature of innocence, but also of the process of growth through the experiences that we have. Will she unintentionally hurt the butterfly?
The empty bird cage pays homage to one of the inspirations for the piece. The Dutch artist Gerard Duo used this particular bird cage as a prop many times throughout his career.
