Artist Statement: Hagar is the epitome of a marginalized person in the Old Testament. She is an enslaved servant who was used to her owner’s own aims. Yet even though she was mistreated by those who probably taught her of the Lord, she turns to Him in her distress. Her child Ishmael is on the verge of death. She prays for the child. And her answer is every mother’s heart wish…the angel says that “God has heard the boy crying.” God has heard and seen her child in distress, and communicated to her in that instant that not only does He hear and answer her prayer, but that His concern is for her child as well.
