Artist Statement:
 
A Certain man had two Sons.  Both of them had a merciful father. One left home to do as he pleased and spent all of his substance in riotous living. Returning to his father’s house friendless--and yet, “his Father saw him and had compassion.”  The son needed the mercy and kindness of his Father.  He was, “lost and is found”. 
The elder son had stayed at home and worked hard, “these many years.”  Angry when his brother was welcomed home with the best robe, a ring, shoes, and a fatted calf—the second son would not celebrate. This son, although dutiful also needed his father to “see him” and be merciful unto him, and help him see his own jealousy and pride.  He was “lost and is found”. 
We are both sons—each desperately needing forgiveness and need reconciliation with our Father.  
In the painting the young man is a symbol of both of the two sons.
