“For this reason he sent his angels to declare the conditions of

repentance, which bring them access to the power of the

Redeemer, and to the salvation of their souls.

“Now my sons remember, remember that it is upon the rock of our

Redeemer, who is Christ, the Son of God, that you must build your

foundation; that when the devil sends his powerful winds, his shafts

in the whirlwind, when all his hail and terrible storm beat upon you,

it will have no power over you to drag you down to the gulf of

misery and endless sorrow, because of the rock on which you are

built which is a sure foundation, a foundation on which if men build

they cannot fall.”

Now this was what Helaman taught his sons. And while he taught

them many things which were not written, a portion was written.

And they remembered his words.

And so, keeping God’s commandments, they went to teach the

word of God to all the Nephites, beginning in the city of Bountiful,

and from there going to Gid, then on to Mulek.

When thinking of Christ’s parable of the wise man building his

house upon the rock, I used to imagine it as a singular home

placed firmly on an immovable boulder. As time has passed, my

conception of this parable has changed. I now believe the rock is

the foundation for not just one home, but the anchor of a great city,

set on a hill, filled with thousands of homes, their lights blazing for

all to see.

On the top of the rock, both to the left and the right, there are

multiple ridges in the distance, a reminder that there is no end

to this rock. All are welcome. There is enough room for all who

are willing to build upon it.

Above the fog and pollution, the city is bathed in the light of the

sun before the impending storm while the buildings below sit in

Darkness.

The waterfall is a symbol of Christ, the living water. That water

descends into the shadow. It comes down from above and

blesses all, both those upon the rock and those in darkness.

The falls abstractly depict the Savior with his arms outstretched

on the cross.
