Artist Statement:
Trapped against her will, isolated from those she knows, Persephone chooses to eat "the forbidden fruit." This painting explores choice itself as a form of resistance when freedom has been taken from you, with all of the consequences that follow. As for Persephone herself, I found a beautiful, albino African American model. I love the idea of Persephone descending to the underworld, the color leaching from her, as the world she leaves behind turns white with winter.
