Artist Statement:
This painting represents the Norse goddess Freyja who (among many other wondrous things) is well-known for her connection to cats. According to legend, Freyja was known to drive a chariot drawn by two large cats gifted to her by Thor. In Viking culture, it was tradition to give newlywed couples a kitten to represent the blessings of Freyja. People connected to Norse paganism today might interpret a visit from a stray cat as communication from Freyja (if you're in need of an interesting web search, Google "Freyja sent me a cat"). As an animal lover and person of Norwegian descent, I love the idea of a goddess being personally involved in the activity of stray cats and those they visit, which is why I chose to depict this goddess in an approachable moment with a common cat.
