Artist Statement:
Red winged blackbirds provided the soundtrack to much of my childhood. I did not grow up in Utah, but the sound of those birds immediately made me feel like Utah Lake was "my" lake as well. Red winged blackbirds and sunflowers are native species to the area, but they are relatively common. I think these survivors can prompt us to ask questions about what species were once common at the lake and are no longer here, and how we can preserve these now abundant species from decline.
