Artist Statement: Science Fiction and Fantasy have long been platforms in which creators have been able to evaluate, discuss, dissect, and even poke fun at societal issues, attitudes and traditions, both good and bad. In "I Have Been Chosen", I mash up the pop culture influences of Flash Gordon, Lego, Toy Story and Star Trek. The Flash Gordon-style hero figure might think he is capturing an enemy prisoner, but in reality, the LGM (Little Green Man) sees his opportunity to become "the chosen one". The background is based on the very first broadcast episode of Star Trek ("The Man Trap") which arguably launched what we now know as the modern era of Science Fiction entertainment. These types of paintings, for me, are a chance to invite fun into life while celebrating the cultural influences that resonate with me and so many others.
