Artist Statement: Christ’s final utterance from the cross is at the heart of this piece. At that moment, Christ entrusts His spirit to the Father. Even in the darkest moment of suffering, there is triumph and hope. My intention in the painting is to portray the tragedy of His death and the promise of redemption it brings. The painting contrasts light and darkness, suffering and transcendence intertwined. Radiant light and deep shadow mirror the painting’s emotional duality. Christ’s departing spirit is a source of light—divine transcendence rising above the darkness of death. Above the city of Jerusalem, storm clouds begin to gather, and the darkening sky embodies the world’s grief and the weight of suffering that follows the crucifixion. Through this contrast of light and dark, I wanted to portray how suffering and glory coexist in this moment. In the painting, the darkest skies serve as a foil that makes Christ’s radiance all the more visible and reinforces the idea that the divine light of Christ triumphs over darkness. Ultimately, I hope this piece inspires contemplation of the depth of love embodied in Christ’s sacrifice. Even in profound darkness, the light of hope and redemption prevails.
