Artist Statement:
In the 16th century, women in Lima developed a distinct clothing style. They were known as the “tapadas limeñas” due to their unique garments, which revealed only one eye. During a period when women faced numerous restrictions and their lives were primarily confined to the private sphere, venturing out incognito allowed them to socialize or visit places that would otherwise have been completely unattainable. This style emerged as a symbol of freedom in the Peruvian capital.
