Artist Statement:
The Satyr was known for mischievous, riotous and lascivious living. Most depictions of the satyr or Pan are active, hoisting wine-filled goblets or in pursuit of a fearful nymph. Sadly, as this symbol is applied to us, society has had a tendency to condone or at the very least excuse especially young men for their poor choices and sexual indecency. I wanted to create a piece of art that rejects that idea. Good men can indeed control themselves and although desire and passion is part of life, we are taught that control is noble and passions can be bridled. This depiction of Pan is not active but at rest, leaning back and relaxed. Pan’s flute, seen as an extension of what he loves, is also set aside.
