Artist Statement:
It is said that Rābiʿa was orphaned at a young age, taken and sold as a slave. One night, her enslaver found her deep in sacred prayer with a ball of light floating above her head. Realizing that she was a holy woman full of godly power, he set her free. A Sufi mystic and “the witness of the love of Allah,” Rābiʿa was known for her teachings and poetry on divine love. She was born in 714 BCE and is buried in Jerusalem in the Mount of Olives.
