Artist Statement:
This stern looking woman was the inventor of the ice cream maker. During a time when women inventors were extremely rare and women couldn’t own property, Nancy Johnson refused to place the patent under her husband’s name and received full credit for her invention. In her private life, Nancy (along with her sister Mary) taught free reading lessons to freed slaves for many years during and after the US Civil War. Although she wasn’t a public activist, Nancy’s life shows a dedication to not only women’s rights but human rights.
