Artist Statement:
Mourning’s Hosanna is a portrait of a slave whose only identified name is Mourning, and whose temple work was performed for her. Although there is no photograph of this woman, I took liberties to imagined Mourning’s likeness, and to portray her in an attitude of triumph on other side of the veil, waving her handkerchief in the Hosanna shout, surrounded by her ancestors.
