Artist Statement:
In my search to learn about the stories of the living women in my family, the first that came before me was my mother. “Morena Guerrera” reflects the strength and determination of my mother, a woman whose life has been full of sacrifice, survival, and nonstop work. She is surrounded by roses, symbolizing the thorns she’s endured, remaining optimistic despite life’s hardships. My mother has been an immigrant from a young age, creating a life for herself and helping countless people make their way into the United States. In 2018, she faced the profound loss of my father. Despite this hardship, she continues to press forward with unwavering determination. My mother has worked tirelessly, at times picking up scrap metal to get by, never allowing circumstances to define her. “Morena Guerrera” is a testament to the strength of immigrant women, those who build, who nurture, and who never stop fighting, even in the face of overwhelming odds. This painting honors my mother’s strength and the indomitable spirit that has carried her through every challenge life has thrown her way.
