Artist Statement:
Carabosse is the name given to the dark fairy in The Sleeping Beauty ballet. The Queen and King invited seven fairies to the Princess’ celebration because they give the most wonderful gifts. When Carabosse showed up, they realized they had forgotten to invite her as she had not been seen in fifty years. In folklore, the magical folk tend to represent aspects of nature and the natural world. The fairies, named for flowers and birds, are all things lovely in the forest. What they all chose not to look at was nature’s shadow: decay, violence, and death. The eighth fairy, though unpleasant, is a necessary aspect of nature, offering wholeness and balance.
