Artist Statement:
Though we see many depictions of the nativity scene in Bethlehem, we don’t often see art of what happened that same night on the opposite side of the world as described in the Book of Mormon. Samuel the Lamanite prophesied of his coming, and there were many signs and wonders, the largest and most sure of which was “a night with no darkness” or “a day a night and a day as if it were one day and there were no night” (Helaman 14). Although they could not physically see the Christ child like the shepherds or wise men, God gave them a sign, and they were able to have faith in his birth and eventual resurrection. In this piece, I wanted to show the awe and wonder those who witnessed this miracle surely felt those two days and a night. I especially wanted to capture that passage of time and show that it wasn’t a miracle of a single moment, but one that was glorious because it lasted.
